Supporting families and vulnerable children
in Zambia affected by Aids

Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and St Catherine's School

What is the situation?

The OVC project and St Catherine's school are based in the Misisi compound near the centre of Zambia's capital city, Lusaka. A great number of people in the township are affected by Aids and HIV. This means that there are many child-headed households and large extended families.

There is high unemployment but many of the carers are too sick or too old to work anyway, and they must struggle to support their families with no regular income at all. In addition, there is a big problem with children living on the street in Lusaka, surviving in a dangerous environment with no adults to care for them or give them guidance.

What is the project?

The OVC project is consists of a team of volunteers (mainly women from Misisi compound) who work within the community to identify the poorest households and will provide assistance in the form of food, clothes, shoes, school fees or help with medical expenses.

St Catherine's school, meanwhile, is a small school that provides a valuable education for more than 70 vulnerable children in the township. While the school is already thriving, there are plans to develop the school further so it can help more children. There are also plans to expand the income-generating schemes for the community.
