Umwana Kasembe project

What on earth is that? I hear you ask. Umwana Kasembe is a Bemba proverb that means 'You are my child, come what may' or, more literally; 'The child is an axe, which you cannot abandon, even though it injures you'!

It is the name of a project we support in Chilanga, a settlement about 30 minutes drive from Lusaka on the main road to the south. It was set up in 2005 by Hellen Mpundu, a Zambian woman who was inspired by her compassion for children. Hellen played a key part when we started our project in Kantolomba.

In 2005, she bought a house and a piece of land in a very poor township near Lusaka. Here, she cares for the township's poorest children and promotes African-style fostering in the community. She works with a group of local people, to help and protect the children; many of whom are orphans or have been abused. Here they find safety, support, food and shelter every day. There is a small classroom for literacy and skills training and a water tank and pump has recently been installed so that vegetables can be grown in the dry season.

We have plans to extend the project and raise more funds for community eduction on HIV/Aids, and to improve opportunities for income-generation. Through education and training, we want to provide local people with the skills they need to support themselves.
