working in partnership with Zambian Communities to support orphans and vulnerable children affected by AIDS

Our main focus is on improving the quality of life and providing opportunities through education, skills training and practical help that will contribute to these communities becoming independent.

This is how we help:

  • Basic literacy and numeracy is taught to children who have never been to school or those who have had to drop out, to enable them to access government schools.
  • Student sponsorship into secondary school is given to the more academically able children through the provision of school fees, books and uniforms.  We also sponsor a small number of students into further education and vocational training. Read Esther's story
  • Primary education is provided to grade 7 in Kantolomba, in a centre which has become the heart of the community.  Volunteers cook a mid-day meal for the 400 children who attend, they also receive clothing and medical attention. Read more about Kantolomba

  • Supporting family based care for children who have lost their parents and other family members through AIDS.  Food, clothing and mosquito nets, emotional support and companionship provide a lifeline to these families, headed often by frail elderly grandparents or by older siblings, who have virtually no means of generating an income. • HIV/AIDS prevention awareness training is porvided to school children and young people through games and activities.  This combines fun with a serious underlying message.

  • Supporting community development.   Where we can, we assist in a practical way to build an infrastructure that will enable communities to be self supporting.  For example the provision of a borehole has transformed a barren patch of land into a thriving market garden, an old tavern has been converted into a school and become the focal point of a whole community. • Training in skills such as carpentry, horticulture, tailoring, crafts and marketing is increasing opportunities for generating an income and this is an area we intend to develop further where the Zambian communities identify a need.
