Families for Children Zambia is a small charitable trust set up in 2001 in partnership with a small group of Zambian people.  The charity's aim is to help people in some of the poorest communities of Zambia, ravaged by AIDS, achive self-sufficiency and hope for the future, through the provision of practical support, education and training.

  • How we began

Families for Children Zambia was founded by two former social workers Wendy Machin and Alan Gillespie who worked as volunteers in Zambia in the 1990's.  Whilst there they met an amazing Zambia woman called Rose Nkandu who was managing the care of around 40 orphaned children.  On their return to the UK Wendy and Alan vowed to help Rose and from that commitment the charity came into being.  Rose sadly died the following year.

The founders and trustees in the UK all work on a voluntary basis which is why we are able to keep administration costs very low and send almost all the funds raised directly to the projects in Zambia.  The UK trustees have a wide range of skills in education, social work, civil engineering, medicine, project management, training and development and finance.
