Situation in Zambia

The Aids pandemic has ravaged Zambia and decimated the child-rearing age group, which means that the traditional ways of caring for children are breaking down. Now it is mainly widows, grandmothers and older children who act as guardians. Often they have no means of support and their children are obliged to go on to the streets to get money, putting themselves at great risk. Many children are malnourished and do not attend school.

Zambia is one of the poorest countries in Africa but it is developing a tradition of democratic government. Despite being beset by problems such as disease and desperate poverty, people are friendly, gracious and uncomplaining. Most are determined to help themselves and their communities and are amazingly resourceful in the ways they do this. There is always plenty to celebrate in the communities and lots of laughter, singing, dancing, so it's not all doom and gloom!
